Is the Surface Book 3 Worth the Money?

Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 is a 2-in-1 PC and part of the Surface line of personal computing devices. It is notable for its full-sized detachable keyboard and dynamic fulcrum hinge. It is also capable of supporting the latest Windows 10 operating system. While the Surface Book 3 lacks Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C, it is a powerful laptop that offers a discrete graphics card. We look at some of the pros and cons of the Surface Book 3 and discuss whether it is worth the money.

Surface Book 3 Is A Powerful Laptop

The Surface Book 3 is a powerful 2-in-1, but is it the best laptop? The answer is a resounding “no.” The Surface Book 3 isn’t the most powerful laptop in the world, but it’s far from a dud either. You can find a powerful laptop in the $1,000 to $3,000 range for the same price as a high-end laptop.

The Surface Book 3’s GPU and CPU are integrated into the keyboard deck. The design is unique, but the functionality of such a design is questionable. While many manufacturers have opted for the swivel hinge design, detachable hybrids are more complex and more fragile. In addition, they are less upgradeable and are generally clunkier than a swivel hinge laptop.

It Lacks Thunderbolt 3

There is a big concern with Microsoft’s Surface devices: they don’t have Thunderbolt 3 ports. Thunderbolt 3 ports allow for super-fast data transfers, external GPU support, and even charging your smartphone. But there are also risks, and one recent security report revealed how a certain vulnerability could affect the Surface Book 3. Microsoft’s solution is a kernel DMA Protection feature that prevents certain levels of vulnerability. On the other hand, Apple has a T2 security chip in the MacBook, which helps secure Touch ID data and boot the computer without any passwords.

One of the main concerns about Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 is the lack of Thunderbolt 3. Many high-end laptops use Thunderbolt and its theoretical 40-Gbps throughput. It’s a popular port connecting external storage devices, such as SSDs, to external GPU enclosures. Those capabilities are a major selling point for Surface devices, but some people worry that the lack of Thunderbolt 3 could compromise security.

It Lacks USB-C

The Surface Book 3 is missing some important ports that the new MacBook Pros have. It only has one USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 port on the left side. This port supports data transfers up to 10Gbps, charging, and display out. It also supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode, Digital Audio, and up to two 4K UHD displays. Sadly, it doesn’t support eGPU. However, there is good news for MacBook Pro users.

While the Surface Book 3 does lack USB-C, it has other positives, such as a larger screen and stylus support. It also docks into a keyboard base that offers additional storage and a powerful GPU. A USB-C port is much easier to use than an older USB-A port. This can be a deal breaker for some users, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for it.

Discrete Graphics Card

While the Surface Laptop 3 is thinner and less expensive than the Surface Book 3, it’s also a bit more powerful. The Surface Book 3 packs Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6 chips, and the updated 17.5-hour battery life is a plus. However, some Surface Book 2 owners complained about losing charge while plugged in during heavyweight tasks. To remedy this issue, the Surface Book 3’s charging speed has been increased by 20 watts.

The Surface Book 3 is unlike any other laptop in the market, featuring a touchscreen that lets you work on a desktop application while still having the mobility of a tablet. Its limited thermal capacity makes it an excellent option for a few specific tasks. For example, if you plan to use the Surface Book 3 as a desktop replacement, you should invest in an Intel i5-based laptop instead. The Surface Book 3 is larger than most competitors, but it still weighs less than a 13in laptop. It’s close to the size of most 15in laptops.

Keyboard Base

A new design element for the Surface Book 3 is the hinge, which curls like the spine of a book when attached. While it may look and feel a little more stylish, it also makes carrying the laptop more comfortable. One criticism, however, has been that the Surface Book 3’s keyboard base leaves a gap above the keyboard, making it difficult to use while typing. In the meantime, the keyboard itself is excellent, with two front-facing speakers and Dolby Atmos audio.

The Surface Book 3 is a laptop that can be used as a tablet or a standalone device. It looks similar to the Surface Book but has a matt silver design and a folio hinge. You can also fill up the keyboard base with batteries to extend the battery life even further. Microsoft claims that the battery life for the Surface Book 3 is 15 hours. However, it’s worth mentioning that it still has a number of flaws.

Touchscreen

The touchscreen on the Surface Book 3 is one of the laptops’ most impressive features. With a resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio, it gives the user more screen real estate for apps and tabs. But the touchscreen isn’t the only thing to like about the Surface Book 3. If you’re planning on using your laptop for engineering tasks, it’s not the right choice.

Firsl, the touchscreen driver on your Surface Book 3 might be outdated orincompatiblee with your operating system. If that is the case, you can try updating it by using the Microsoft Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. You should also try reinstalling the touchscreen driver. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you can try resetting the touchscreen to factory settings. This will erase all your local data and reinstall the OS and drivers. If these steps aren’t successful, try reinstalling Windows or the Touchscreen Driver and see if the problem persists.
